What is Mortar Board?
Pi Sigma Alpha, or "Mortar Board," is a National Honorary for college seniors at The Ohio State University. Our name refers to the cap that seniors wear with their gown when they graduate.
We excel on OSU's many campuses through leadership, scholarship and service. Mortar Board's mission is to offer seniors the opportunity to expand their leadership skills and provide service to the university and its surrounding communities.
As one of the founding chapters, The Ohio State University hosts the annual National Mortar Board conference every summer, inviting students from 213 chapters across the country to share ideas and set goals for the coming year.

What do we do?
Every year, 40-50 new members organize service projects, appear in the Homecoming Parade, host social events, accomplish fundraising goals, lead the national Mortar Board community, foster leadership opportunities, tutor urban youth at Hamilton Elementary School, support each other's campus activities and initiate the next class!
Annual events include the Welcome Week Pillow Fight, the Faculty Reception that we co-host every February with Ohio State's other senior class honorary Sphinx, and the New Member Retreat in May. We meet in Mortar Board court for a final toast during the last weeks of spring quarter.
Mortar Board's officers handle many high-profile events. The First Vice President hosts Selections Day in April, where the entire Mortar Board class votes on hundreds of applications to select new members. The Second Vice President arranges our legendary tapping ceremonies later that month, and the Third Vice President welcomes the new class with a spring initiation ceremony at Mirror Lake.
Ohio State University - Founding Chapter
The Ohio State Mortar Board chapter, founded in 1914, established the name, pin and ideals that Mortar Board chapters all across the nation have used for over 90 years.
In 1918, delegates from The Ohio State University, The University of Michigan, Swarthmore College and Cornell University formed the first national honor society for senior women, adopting many of the traditions created by the OSU Chapter. The name "Mortar Board" refers to the hat that all seniors wear when they graduate!
The Mortar Board National Conference comes to Columbus, OH every July. In 2005, Ohio State recieved 3 awards: The Golden Torch, an award for Hamilton Elementary, and an award for the our annual pillow fight!
Mortar Board is affiliated with AOSCH, the Association of Ohio State Class Honoraries! Our AOSCH representatives are Elika Nosrati and Allison Gentry.
